The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) of the United States announced recently the adoption of a new regulation in order to ensure the development of next generation mobile services (5G). The new rules include the opening of almost 11 GHz of high-frequency spectrum combining licensed (3.85GHz) and unlicensed (7GHz) spectrum. Specifically, the commission created the Upper Microwave Flexible Use service in the 28 GHz (27.5GHz – 35GHz), 37 GHz (37GHz – 38.6 GHz) and 39 GHz (38.6GHz – 40GHz) bands, and the unlicensed 64 GHz – 71 GHz band.
